Canadian musician Matthew Larkin is Organist and Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa, Ontario. English organist and composer Sir John Stainer (1840-1901) was Organist of Saint Paul’s Cathedral, London from 1872 until 1888. Dr. Phillip Ledger (1937-2012) was Director of Music at King’s College, Cambridge from 1974-1982.

From AllMusic.com, “Vigilate is a five-part Latin motet by the renaissance English composer William Byrd (1543-1623). It was published in the Cantiones Sacrae of 1589 and takes its text from Mark 13:35-7, where Christ exhorts his disciples to watch for the end of the world.” Brahms wrote his “Sacred Song” in 1856 at the age of 23. “Laetentur coeli” translates as “Let the heavens rejoice” and is taken from Isaiah 49:13.

The lyrics for Charles Wood’s “O Thou the central orb” are taken from a sonnet written by English poet Henry Ramsden Bramley’s (1833-1917). sonnet of the same name. Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble was founded in 1992 and is a resident ensemble of St. James Cathedral, Seattle, Washington. French organist Claude Balbastre (1724-1799) was organist of Notre Dame CAthedral and Eglise St. Roch in Paris.

The recording entitled “A Procession with Carols on Advent Sunday” was released in 1981. It follows the traditional lessons and carols format which alternates hymns and choral music with scripture readings and prayers.
