The excitement of contemporary choral music and the creative process are on display at Treble Voices Now, WomenSing’s new music festival for upper voiced choirs. Taking place Friday evening, April 15 in Lafayette, and Saturday, April 16 in Berkeley, the festival will feature events at each venue that are free and open to the public, as well as a very exciting artistic team!
None other than America’s iconic Alice Parker and the dynamic Charles Bruffy will lead this year’s festival, which will also feature a brand new choral commission in progress by Marjorie Halloran, the 2015-2016 winner of WomenSing’s Youth Inspiring Youth—Commissioning Emerging Composers composition contest.
Friday, April 15, will offer a composer’s Public Workshop, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1035 Carol Lane, Lafayette, from 6:30-8:30 PM. Invited choirs will join the process of fine-tuning the new YIY composition as Marjorie works with her mentors, Teaching Artist Alice Parker, Advising Composer Charles Bruffy and WomenSing Artistic Director, Martin Benvenuto. The public is invited to experience this fascinating process first-hand.
During the Festival weekend, each choir will have the opportunity to work with Charles Bruffy on their own individual repertoire. On Saturday, April 16 at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, 2345 Channing Way, Berkeley, the festival will once again culminate in a free Festival Concert at 3:00 PM. The concert will feature a pre-premiere of the new composition-in-progress and will showcase individual performances by each participating choir.
WomenSing will be joined at the festival by Contra Costa Children’s Chorus, Miramonte High School Bella Voce, Singers Marin Wings of Song and Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble.
