Help! I am way overwhelmed at the process of picking music.
I have to pick between two kinds of Folk music and I am
unsure which is the best way to go. This is not my area of
expertise as I am a singer looking for music for my ensemble and
not an educator, composer, director or any of those leadership
roles. These are my narrowed down choices:
1. Folk Music through the ages.
This is from early to current and could be from anywhere and
2. Folk music from around the world.
This does not have to be time specific but rather from
different regions. Although I am realizing it could be both!
I am kind of leaning towards the the former but don’t know from
where I should concentrate the music area…or era for that matter.
Should I combine the two together? If so, what regions would you
suggest me looking in any time era (as I am not familiar with who
has done what, and when in order to concentrate my search). Is it
easiest to do a search for early folk music from an area, or from a
time period? I had it planned out to do just plain old music
through the ages and that was easier to focus on the time frame of
medieval, middle ages, renaissance, baroque, etc, but that is not
what they are looking for.
I have been pondering this: Is it best to focus on the
difficulty of the piece in meter, complexity etc. or have a
different language to learn for each piece. Again, I am
I am having a hard time and my research keeps getting deeper and
This is for an a cappella choir of about 16 SATB mixed
voices. We can handle solos from any voice if it includes it within
the piece. These need to be short in length, 2-4 minutes each and
of medium or higher difficulty. Most of the ensemble are high level
Here are some I have tentatively looked at but some of these I
have only heard but don’t have access to actually seeing the music.
This would be Folk music from around the world category. I do not
have any yet for Folk music through the ages as I don’t know where
to start. How does one search that out?
Newfoundland, She is Like the Swallow. (Does anyone have or
like a particular favorite version or arrangement)?
Heaven Above, Yugoslavia
Glaubst du dass ich, Czech
Herz lieblich Lieb, durch Scheiden, Germany
Adjo Kerida, Jewish
We have access to a few different instrumentalists if the need
I don’t know where to start if I am looking at Folk music
through the ages. Would it be easier to choose that but from a
particular area as well? Any ideas here? Would it be easiest to
combine my two ideas together? Folk music through the ages and
regions? Or is that too broad?
Does anyone have an idea of the easiest route to search and
obtain scores quickly, cpdl would be awesome but we can certainly
purchase some of the pieces. I need at least a few by this weekend
Thanks, this is a task for me that I need to turn in soon to
our group for approval but am hoping for help in narrowing this
down for suggestions of certain pieces or links to places to look.
I only have another day or two to decide on this so all help is
PS, you all were awesome in your suggestions for me last time
in looking for Saint Patrick Day music!!
