Our choir is planning a Christmas concert centered on the theme of the Christmas Star and also the Magi. Any suggestions for treble voice selections along these lines would be MOST appreciated.
June 12, 2017 at 7:26 am #537758Try “Child In The Manger” (fairly easy, SA+pno) or “Patapan” (medium difficulty, SSA a cappella). Both at this page: http://www.hutchingsmusic.co.uk/scores-by-choir-type/female-voices/
What age and skill level is your choir? Not sure if this is unbroken treble voices, or if you have adult sopranos.
June 12, 2017 at 7:27 am #537759Don’t know if an italian song on Mary could be useful, anyway you could find it on my page fabioalessi.altervista.org title “E’ nato il Signore” (“The Lord is born”). It is SSA / SST. You could listen there to the mp3. Should you be interested, please contact me at the address you will find on that page. Best Regards, Fabio.
June 12, 2017 at 7:27 am #537763Hello Robert
I have a SA version of my Christmas song, There Is A Child. It fuses part of Silent Night into the narrative. It is available to view and preview atHere are the words…
There is a child
In a mother’s arms
Far from home, far from homeThere is a star
Shining in the night
A guiding light, guiding lightThere is a hope
Rising in her heart
For this life, this life, this lifeSilent night, holy night
All is calm, all is brightWho is this mother?
Who is this child?
Where is this star so bright?
They are every mother, every child
Let us be that guiding lightThere is a child
In a mother’s arms
Far from home, far from homeIn search of peace
And a better life
For this child, for this childThere is a hope
Rising in her heart
For this life, this life
There is a hope
Rising in her, rising in her heart
For this life, this life.Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is brightThere is a child
(All is bright)
There is a star
(All is bright)There is a hope
There is a childKind regards

jeromemalek@sbcglobal.netJune 13, 2017 at 11:50 am #537774Hi Robert,
It appears there may be a shortage of pieces fulfilling all your requirements, which is a pity. I’ve written several pieces about the Christmas star and the Magi, including “Noel!” (publ. OUP) and the following self published pieces – “Star of the East”, “Bright was the Star” and “Guiding Star” – all available for viewing and listening at http://www.swirlymusic.com/composer/gordon-thornett/. I also did an arrangement of “There’s a star in the East” (“Rise up, shepherd”), which is published by OUP.
Unfortunately, however, all the above are for mixed choirs (SATB). If you wanted to take a look at any of the above, especially those on the Swirly Music site – I’d be happy to do a new SA or SSA arrangement of any one of them that took your fancy.
You don’t mention whether your choir is made up of adults or children – if the latter, you might like to take a look at “The Sleepy Shepherd Boy”. This is also on the Swirly Music site, but isn’t specifically about the Christmas star.June 13, 2017 at 11:50 am #537775I’m quite sure that I have what you’re trying to find. If you go to http://www.wallacedepue.com and contact me, I’ll send you scores and
.mp3 files.Sincerely,
Wallace De Pue Sr.

June 13, 2017 at 11:51 am #537789Ciao Robert, interesting your concert! I would like to suggest this piece. If you are (included other forum readers) interested in, please send an e-mail directly to czmorago@gmail.com
In the same line, I have two more.
Best regards,
César
June 13, 2017 at 11:52 am #537790For something a little out of the ordinary but very accessible, you might want to look at my setting of “Today the Virgin Gives Birth” (OCP Publications). The lovely melody is a BYzantine chant, sung three times through: unison, SA, SSA. It was composed for the Contra Costa Children’s Chorus and performed by them under Director Iris Lamanna. at the 2011 Festival of the Aegean on Syros Island, Greece. They sang the unison verse in the original Greek, but it’s published with the English translation throughout (the Greek version in transliteration is included as an option)
June 13, 2017 at 11:55 am #537803While it is not SSA, Charles Ives wrote a beautiful unison piece called “A Christmas Carol (Little star of Bethlehem)” that sounds downright magical when you take the phrase markings literally.
Hope that helps!
