I’m a first-year teacher working for a district that really supports the arts. I just found out yesterday that I have to design my own music appreciation curriculum for 6-8th grade because there isn’t one in place. The course is on a 9-week rotation. I get different students every marking period. If anyone has resources or advice, they would be greatly appreciated! School starts next week.
Context: I’m the HS choir director & I go to the MS every afternoon. The goal is for me to eventually be only at the HS, so recruiting and creating a vertical vocal music program are my immediate & long-term goals. I plan on making this course more vocal music-specific to serve my own recruitment needs (and I have the green light from my principal to do this). My administrators have told me that any resource I need is mine; I just have to let them know. They also want to build the vocal music program within the district.
