I am in need of repertoire suggestions for a middle school choir made up of fifteen students – two boys (one soprano, one baritone/bass) and thirteen girls. What can we successfully do with such a small group and that kind of voicing? We meet twice a week for about 40 minutes each time.
You might take a look at 3 part variable voicing. Some classics I used back the day:
•Brown, G: Good news
•Eilers: My Lord
•Haydn: Life at court (canon)
•Mozart (attrib): Dona Nobis Pacem (canon)
•West (arr.): Five hundred miles
One great utilitarian piece that has escaped a lot of attention is Beethoven’s “Bundeslied” – it really deserves to be better known. I made a German/English edition for cpdl:
While you are at it, you might take a look at my own “Boatmen’s Stomp” published by G.Schirmer.
Hope that helps!
