With summertime comes the ubiquitous task of searching for new music. I know the parameters are fairly tight.
I am looking for medium-easy to medium-difficult pieces for my church choir of 12. We are a Reformed Protestant church looking especially for pieces which are 2:00-3:00 minutes long, a cappella, and in English (or a good translation into English). We have done everything from Tallis to Billings to Stopford.
Thanks for sharing your favorite pieces.June 11, 2018 at 12:43 pm #566910
You might take a look at the following:
Bach: Christ lag in todesbanden BWV 4
Britten: Rejoice in the lamb
Pinkham: Wedding cantata
Purcell: Come, ye sons of art
Ramirez: Misa Criolla
Schubert: Mass in G D.167
All would be both challenging and rewarding.
Hope that helps!

One little jewel that has been very useful is “The Oxford Easy Anthem Book” published by OUP back in 1957. While some of the 50 anthems in this collection have been “watered down,” most are modern and very practical for small but dedicated forces.
Hope that helps!

I wrote a nice English translation of Palestrina’s “Sicut cervus.” E-mail me if you’re interested; no charge.June 18, 2018 at 11:23 am #567639
the Oxford Book of Tudor Anthems offers many suitable works… also, Harris’s ‘Holy is the True Light’ is a gem.

Thomas Keesecker: I’m also looking for my small church choir. We sang your Arise, Shine last year, and it was a hit.
We only meet about 5 times before Christmas and since its a mostly untrained choir, the range is very restricted. My sopranos are comfortable up to a C#5, and can go up to about an E5 for one or two notes. I also try to not have my men not go above a D4.
Do any of the songs you listed fall in this range?August 8, 2018 at 8:52 am #573213
Canasg is an e-publisher based in the UK, and we sell PDF files with licences to print your own copies – as many as you like, and as often as you like, but for the exclusive use of the ensemble that buys the licence. Complete perusal copies for every piece can be downloaded for free from the website. Prices depend on the number of singers in your group.
The main features on our website are catalogues and scores, and they’re best read on a full-sized screen.
