West Chester University is pleased to announce its annual Summer Choral Symposium, held from July 19-22, 2017 in Swope Music Hall at the WCU campus in West Chester, PA. Guest clinician Dr. Richard Sparks, Professor of Conducting at the University of North Texas, will join WCU music faculty members David P. DeVenney and Ryan Kelly for this event.
The WCU Choral Conducting Symposium is designed to sharpen podium gestures and communication skills, enhance knowledge of repertoire, and deepen score study and analysis techniques. It is designed for working conductors, in public schools, churches, and community choirs. Conductors may participate in two ways: as Conducting Participants, who will get ample podium time with master teachers; or as Observers, who will be engaged in all activities, but who will not conduct. All sessions will be video recorded and given to the participating conductors. Morning sessions will begin with a reading session of new music, followed by a conducting masterclass on smaller works. Afternoon and evening sessions will be devoted to various topics, including score study, with masterclasses focused on Schubert’s “Mass in G.” On Saturday, participants will conduct the Schubert with an expanded choir and a small chamber orchestra.
Participating Conductors (a limit of 12) will be chosen on a first-come basis; the cost of registration is $500. The cost for Observers (unlimited registration) is $200. College and University students may enroll as observers for $100. For additional fees, participants may receive 3 graduate credits, and PA Act 48 credits for continuing education are also available.
