CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS is celebrating its 100th anniversary as the longest continually-running Christmas tradition in West Michigan. The service will include “Christe, Lux Mundi,” the premiere performance of a commission from composer Sean Ivory for mixed chorus, chamber orchestra and brass quintet. The trilogy sets “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” the Sara Teasdale poem “Night in Arizona,” and “Christe, Lux Mundi.” The commission is sung by The Chancel Choir, accompanied by Grand Rapids Symphony Strings and Brass.
The service also includes T Choral Scholars (Matthew Culloton’s “In Dulci Jubilo” and “God’s Mother Be”), Parkmeisters (male chorus), three youth choirs, bell choir, 81-rank organ and Steinway concert grand piano. The congregation will sing Dan Forrest’s “The First Noel” and Mack Wilberg’s “Joy to the World,” along with David Willcock’s settings of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” and “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.”
Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 4:30 PM (pre-service piano mini recital at 4:00). Free and open to the public, at First (Park) Congregational Church, 10 E. Park Place NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
