David Frying has been voted American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) President-elect by the association’s members in a nationwide election. He will assume that role on July 1, becoming a member of the ACDA Executive Committee and National Board.
David Fryling is director of choral activities at Hofstra University, where he conducts the select Hofstra Chorale and Hofstra Chamber Choir, teaches choral conducting, and supervises student teachers in the field. Prior to this election, Fryling served as ACDA’s Eastern Region President.
In response to news of the election results, Fryling stated “I’m thrilled to be able to serve to further ACDA’s vital artistic and educational leadership across the nation and the world. I am inspired by — and hope to inspire in return — our passionate and multi-talented membership. We are each accountable to each other for continuing our most critical of human-centered missions: Invite everyone to sing their songs; mentor the young and future choral leaders in our midst; and engage our greater communities in creating meaning — and impact — with our art.”
Fryling is the founding conductor of the eVoco Voice Collective, a non-profit organization that presents a yearly concert series, community outreach and education opportunities for high school students, music educators, and the community at-large, and a multi-generational recital that awards young artist scholarships. In the fall of 2014, he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame as the “Educator of Note,” and he is the winner of the 2016-17 American Prize in Conducting in both the community chorus and college and university categories.
ACDA’s executive director, Tim Sharp, said when announcing the news, “I am delighted to welcome David Fryling into this national leadership role, and look forward to his engagement with ACDA in this capacity.” Fryling will serve as ACDA Vice-President from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2023, and President from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2025.
American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is made up of approximately 20,000 members who represent more than 1 million singers across the country. ACDA members conduct and teach a range of choirs, including school and university-based choirs, community choral groups, professional ensembles, and music in worship. ACDA’s mission is to inspire excellence in choral music through education, performance, composition, and advocacy.
